Winning a lottery can change your life (for good or bad) depending upon how the winners react! There are many unusual things that can happen to players. Here are some amazing stories of how your path to a jackpot may not be as simple as we imagine.
1. Double Winners
David Long and Kathleen Mackenzie, a couple from Scunthorpe, England, managed to defy the odds of 283 million to one, not once but, twice. They won two £1 million jackpots, once in 2013 and then again in 2015.
2. Luckiest Single Winner
Mavis Wanczyk became the luckiest single lottery winner ever after she won a Powerball jackpot worth $700 million. Although there is one more single big win in the queue for the $1.6 Billion Mega Millions jackpot, that winner hasn’t come forward yet! Until that happens, Mavis holds the record of being the biggest single lottery winner. Mavis worked at the Mercy Medical Centre and she found out about her winning when she was leaving work to go home on a Wednesday. She said that her co-worker looked at her ticket and told her that she had won. He immediately instructed her to sign the back of her lottery ticket. She was so shocked that she couldn’t drive and her co-worker had to drop her off at her house to make sure she was fine!
3. Disastrous Divorce
When Denise Rossi won $1.3 million in the California state lottery, she demanded a divorce from her husband. She did not tell her husband about her winnings and left her husband Thomas without a word. Her husband was suspicious and hesitant but granted her a divorce anyway.
When he later learned that his wife had kept the lottery winning a secret from him,he sued Denise for not disclosing her winnings in the divorce. Remarkably, the judge awarded him every cent he deserved!
4. Lost Ticket Shambles
Taking care of your lottery ticket is just as important as purchasing it in the first place. A lottery ticket is the only proof of your win. Lottery companies never accept playslips or photos of tickets to claim your winnings. So, if you claim that you picked the right numbers but you don’t have your ticket, you won’t get paid. Lottery companies state that thousands of lottery tickets go unclaimed and the two major reasons are that people lose their tickets or forget to check their ticket. So it pays to keep your ticket on hand.
Martyn Tott and his wife, from Watford, Hertfordshire, England, learned this lesson the hard way when they lost out on a £3 million jackpot after losing their lottery ticket. Even though they were able to convince authorities about their ticket purchase but it took longer than the 30-days players are given to claim their prizes making this the largest unclaimed jackpot in the UK Lottery’s history.
5. Oldest Winner
Nguyen, a 97-year-old man from Vietnam, is recorded as the oldest lottery winner who won $340,000 in 2010. The spent his whole life living a poor lifestyle and struggled to spend that kind of money. He eventually gave most of it away and the little he saved spent on a new TV, some meat and a sack of rice for himself and everyone living in the same alley as him.
6. Family of Jackpot Winners
An unnamed family from Tipton, UK, has had three separate jackpot winners. They managed to defy odds of 350 billion to one and won a total of over £3.25 million.
7. Feeling Lucky? Play Lottery!
Two friends, Carly Wiggett and Becky Witt, purchased lottery tickets after Carly’s mother read their horoscope in the daily newspaper whichpredicted that they were in for a huge windfall. Feeling lucky, the duo bought a ticket and won more than £336,000 in 2013.
8. Queen of the Lotto
The Queen of England reportedly won £10 on the first ever UK lotteries. The headlines read, “ONE’S WON.” There is no information available about whether she claimed the prize or not!
9. Migrant Wins Big
An unemployed Senegalese man was rescued by the Spanish coast guard after making the dangerous journey from Morocco eight years ago. In 2015, he won the equivalent of £296,000 in Spain’s annual Christmas. He was overwhelmed and said, “I want to give thanks to Spaniards and the Spanish government for rescuing me when I was in the sea.”
10. Suspicious Numbers
In September 2009, the same six numbers were drawn in two consecutive rounds of the country’s national lottery raising suspicions of lottery tampering. The odds of this happening were calculated to be one in 4 billion by the statisticians. Surprisingly, no one won in the first drawing but there were about 18 winners of the second-tier prize and the lottery association split the top prize between them.
11. Dream Becomes Reality
Terry Vigus bagged £1.7 million in 2014 after dreaming of the winning numbers. He claims that he dreamt the winning numbers, he said, “I saw the balls drop and one by one they matched the numbers on my ticket. In my dream, I had matched five and was waiting for the sixth ball to fall when I suddenly woke up.”
